Pony cars -- a class of American-made compact, affordable cars that are big on style and performance -- are back. Nearly half a century after their debut, a brand-new trio of retro-styled pony cars have roared back into driveways and dealerships. The Dodge ChallengerChevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustang (which started the pony car craze in the 1960s) are hotter, hipper and better than ever.

The Camaro, resurrected early this year, is one of the few home runs on Chevrolet's product scorecard, and the Challenger, reclaimed from history's dustbin in 2008, is channelling Chrysler's glory days. Meanwhile, the Ford Mustang, which has remained in continuous production longer than any other American car besides the Corvette, got a complete overhaul for 2010.

Enjoy the ride through pony car history, from the 1960s to 2010.
