As the busy summer weekends give way to autumn’s slightly slower pace, it’s the ideal time to bundle the family into the car and set out to enjoy a fall drive. Here are a few ideas to help you make the most of this wonderful season.
Capture the moment
Mother Nature puts on quite a show this time of year, with trees ablaze in reds, oranges and golds. If you’re lucky enough to also get a day with a bright blue sky, the combination makes a beautiful backdrop for photos. Shoot the scenic ones and then convince your family members to pose for you as well. Don’t forget the self-timer feature, if your camera has one. Try resting your camera on the hood of the car to get a good picture of the entire group.
Learn the lesson
Before you head out, pick up a book from your local library on different types of trees. This will not only keep the kids occupied during the trip, but everyone will come back with a bit more knowledge about what they’ve seen. Challenge the kids to find different kinds of leaves and press them in a notebook to commemorate the family outing.
Enjoy the events
Fall is a popular time of year for festivals and events, so do a little research before you head out and see what’s happening at your destination. You can also look into attractions along your route that will give everyone a chance to stretch their legs a little and add an extra element of fun to the experience. We’ve listed some ideas onthe interactive map above.
Spend the night
To take full advantage of the temperate season and incredible scenery, turn your drive into a weekend getaway. This not only gives you time to get lost down a particularly picturesque country road, but also the opportunity to venture a little further from home than you would on a day trip. Remember, not all vacations have to include plane rides and a week away. Sometimes a short break is just enough to feel refreshed and regroup as a family.
